Lions News Roundup - November 2009

  • Winchelsea Lions had half a dozen delegates at the District Convention 2009, held in Camperdown. A particular highlight was the fancy dress dinner, attended by Austin Powers (Phil Eskrigge) amongst others!
  • The Lions Chuck Wagon has been particularly busy - Barwon Park Rabbit Day, Murdeduke Gardens Open Day (all proceeds going to Hesse Rural Health Service, well over $3,000), the Winchelsea Lions "Walk To Wurdale" fundraiser in aid of Make A Wish (again well over $3,000 donated), the Neighbourhood Watch School Day, and the Winchelsea Festival.
  • The sheep manure fundraising project continues to be highly successful, with a number of working bees being held out at Turkeith homestead to collect & bag sheep manure for sale on the Cape Otway Road and at other locations.
  • The recycled paper project has recently injected significant funds due to the Government's subsidy toward insulation installations, some of which are manufactured with recycled newspaper. The Winchelsea Lions put in the extra effort to sort and bundle the collected recycled paper, which offers the recyclers high-value deliveries - reflected in the price paid for it!
  • The Walk to Wurdale fundraiser was held on the perfect day for it - overcast but dry, low twenties temperature. All sorts of people and some dogs made the walk from Winchelsea Senior Citizens to the Lions President's home in Wensleydale Station Road (a distance of 12km). Walking, cycling, driving, horse-riding, any method was acceptable! The event saw fewer people this year, but all the same raised a similar amount. The proceeds, plus a bit more, go to the Make A Wish Foundation.
  • Winchelsea Lions will be donating a non-standard electric bed to Hesse Rural Health Service, for those patients over 6' that don't quite fit the normal beds.

Lions News Roundup - September 2009

  • A few Winchelsea Lions members will be off to the District Convention in Camperdown
  • The Chuck Wagon will be at the Barwon Park Rabbits Day (11th October), marking 150 years since the release of rabbits into Australia
  • Lions members put in 14 hours of recycled-paper sorting & bundling, 21 hours of chuck-wagon at the Gun Club, 64 hours bagging and distributing sheep manure (the price of sheep manure will be increasing to $5 to reflect the increased costs to the Club for this activity). Another bagging working bee was arranged at Turkeith.
  • The next dinner meeting (7th October) will host the District Governor, and is to be held at the Winchelsea Tea Rooms. The Club hopes to induct three new members.
  • Financial support was agreed for "Operation Smile", a multi-district appeal to send medical personnel and resources overseas to assist with the surgical correction of child deformities - changing lives one smile at a time.
  • The Chuck Wagon is in for a busy time, booked in for the Neighbourhood Watch awards event at the Winchelsea Primary School, the Winchelsea Festival, Barwon Park's Rabbit Day, and Murdeduke Open Garden Day. The Chuck Wagon will also be providing food at this year's Walk To Wurdale fundraiser on the 1st November.

Lions News Roundup - August 2009

  • Members and partners enjoyed a special dinner at the Winchelsea Tearooms, in honour of Japanese youth exchange student Yuriko. Yuriko was staying with Gary and Debbie Drayton for three weeks. The dinner had an "Australian" theme with everyone asked to wear something Australian, and with an Australian trivia quiz. Yuriko was undertaking an intensive tour of southwest Victoria including visits to the zoo, Melbourne CBD, the Great Ocean Road, and many other of the sights and experiences on offer. Several Lions members assisted in this regard. Yuriko also paid a visit to Winchelsea Primary School and enjoyed a couple of footy games Winchelsea's Eastern Reserve grounds.
  • About $1,200 and a further $1,100 have been raised from the sale of sheep manure and the Lions chuck wagon recently.

Paper recycling continues to produce excellent levels of income. Apparently, the sorting and bundling of the paper (mainly by Lion Hugh McCallum) is what has led to such excellent prices for the recycled paper.

Planning continues for this year's Walk To Wurdale fund-raiser.

Wii for all

The Winchelsea Lions Club recently donated a novel gift to the residents at Hesse Rural Health's Chelsea Lodge - a Nintendo Wii games console. With wireless remote controls that feature movement sensors, the Wii includes games such as bowling, tennis, golf, and baseball. The games are easy to learn, and can be played either standing up or sitting down, and require fairly natural movements that simulate the real thing.

Hesse Rural Health Director of Nursing, Ann Davis, thanked the Lions Club for the generous support. The Wii games will be incorporated into the current activity program at Chelsea Lodge. The Wii will also be available for shared activity between generations when children and grandchildren visit.

Paper Recycling Still Strong

Winchelsea Lions Club's ongoing Paper Recycling Project yielded bumper proceeds recently, with a surprisingly large increase in the payment per tonne. This project is a valuable contribution to the Club's funds, used for a range of community benefits on a local, regional and national basis.

Under the guidance of Lion Hugh McCallum, old newspapers and magazines are collected in the shed next to the Winchelsea Senior Citizens building (in Harding Street) and sorted into bundles. About every other month, all this recyclable paper is loaded into a large truck and sent off to Colac for recycling. The Winchelsea Lions Club receives a payment per tonne collected, the amount of which varies according to market rates.

In spite of the current economic downturn, a large jump in the price for recycling paper resulted in a very welcome boost to the Lions Club bank account. Community support for the Paper Recycling Project has consistently been excellent. All Winchelsea residents are encouraged to save up their newspapers and magazines (if possible tied in bundles using string) and to deposit them in the paper shed for recycling. The shed can be found at the back left corner of the Senior Citizen's Club carpark.

The Council does provide recycling bins, however by giving the paper to the Lions Club, the local community-service organisation is able to raise additional funds for local use. Accordingly, taking recycling paper to the shed is an easy way to make a community contribution.
