Lions News Roundup - Dec 2012

  • The 2012 Walk to Wurdale raised around $2,000, with these proceeds going towards the netball change rooms at the Eastern Reserve.
  • The Lions Club Monster Christmas Stocking raffle tickets went on sale, from various shops and a Lions stall most days.
  • Linda & John Carter joined the Winchelsea Lions Club, transferring from Anglesea.
  • The Winchelsea Lions Santa was scheduled to appear at the Winchelsea kindergarten.
  • The Club Christmas dinner was to be help at Moriac pub.
  • A School Scholarship was awarded to Murphy Floyd for outstanding leadership, plus a donation made to Winchelsea Primary School for its Reading Cafe. Lions Neville Mawson & President Russell Holloway presented these at the school's graduation dinner. Also present were the 2 Winchelsea Ward Councillors,  RSL representative Steve Woods, & Helen Verity on behalf of Neighborhood Watch.
  • The Winchelsea clock tower is to move as part of the highway redevelopment and addition of a 3rd bridge over the Barwon River - the clock tower will be nearer to the pool.
  • 23 tonnes of recycled paper raised well over $4,000 for the Winchelsea Lions.
  • Santa was going to be in town on Saturday for the Raffle draw.
  • An ambulatory BP monitor for Hesse Hospital (for use at the clinic) was agreed to be purchased and donated.

Winchelsea To Wurdale 2012

Bike riders on Walk To WurdaleSunday the 4th November saw a beautifullly sunny day, perfect for the annual Winchelsea Lions Club fundraising event, the "Walk To Wurdale". For 2012, the proceeds go towards female change rooms at the Eastern Reserve community facilities, which include a state-of-the-art netball court but missed out on modern change facilities for women.

Lions News Roundup - October 2012

  • The Lions Club of Winchelsea made a donation to the Drug Awareness Foundation for its ongoing education campaign.
  • Winchelsea Lions attended the Barwon Park Mansion "Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour Family Day", providing the chuck wagon food & drink services. Lions also entered not one but two hobby-horse teams for a re-enactment of the 1863 Melbourne Cup, which was won by Thomas Austin (who built Barwon Park.). The actual 2012 solid-gold Melbourne Cup was available to see and hold too, worth $175,00.
  • It was noted that the V2 Lions District, which includes Winchelsea, has the 2nd largest membership in Australia with a growth of 38 members so far this year, 27% being ladies. Winchelsea Lions welcomed its first female member this year.
  • The Lions Christmas Raffle has been granted approval, and will take place between 19th November and 22nd December (being drawn on the 22nd December). Watch for raffle ticket outlets and the Lions stall soon.
  • Lions Christmas Cakes will also be on sale in the near future, and will include the usual small and large size cakes but new this year will be limited numbers of Christmas Puddings too.
  • The Trick Or Treat Kidz Fest organisers have invited the President of Winchelsea Lions, Russell Holloway, to officially open the event on the 28th October.
  • Winchelsea Lions would like to publicly acknowledge the very large contribution to the Winchelsea community by Kathleen Lomaz, who sadly recently passed away. Kathleen was active in a number of areas including the footy club.

 

Lions News Round - August 2012

  • The Winchelsea Lions Chuck wagon was at the Make A Wish street party, 25th July.
  • It was noted that discussions between various parties had come to a decition to name the park on the northern (Hesse Street) side of the bluestone bridge as "Stirling Park", with the park on the southern side (bottom pub) to continue to be known as "Lions Park" as it was originally created and landscaped by the Lions Club over 30 years ago, where it used to be just scrub.
  • Winchelsea Primary School will begin collecting paper for recycling, on behalf of the Winchelsea Lions.
  • It was noted that the Gun Club had been given an extension to continue using their current site until December this year, but will then be required to vacate. No prospects for an alternative site had been found. The loss of the Gun Club in Winchelsea will have a significant effect on the income of the Winchelsea Lions.
  • Geelong St Laurence will play against Colac St Laurence in a footie game at the Eastern Reserve - Winchelsea Lions have been requested to provide a sausage sizzle. All supporters and watchers welcome!. Fri 23 August from 11:30am.
  • This year's Walk to Wurdale is planned for Sunday 4th November.

Lions News Roundup - June 2012

  • At the June dinner meeting for Winchelsea Lions, Colin & Melissa from Christian Collegespoke on the college's involvement with East Timor, including;
    • the history of their involvement
    • they employ 5 in their Friendship Houses
    • the fund & run a kindergarten
    • students visit twice a year
    • they provide computer, sports, and music equipment
    • they are just finishing a 2nd school, with financial assistance from Lions Australia financial help

  • At the same meeting, Jason of the Trick Or Treat Kidz Fest committee presented a thankyou certificate to the Winchelsea Lions, and outlined how this year's event was planned to be bigger and better. Set for 28th October, they are aiming for 3,000 people.

 

Lions News Roundup - May 2012

  • Winchelsea Lions Club over the years have contributed greatly to the park along the Barwon River in Winchelsea - further to recent plans by Surf Coast Shire to (re)name the park to Stirling Park, the Lions Club have submitted to the shire that it be named "Lions Park" instead. A suggestion has been made that the bluestone bridge be named Stirling Bridge, as it is destined to be for pedestrian only.
  • A major project has been decided for the Winchelsea Lions Club, namely the construction of netball change rooms.  A subcommittee is to be formed to direct the project. Local company High Tide recently constructed change rooms at Geelong's Queens Park, and based on this the project could be for a total of around $120,000.
  • 24 tonnes recycled paper has just been dispatched by truck.
  • A V2 District Lions promotion trailer is being put together for use by any club in the District, for the promotion of Lions in general. Winchelsea Lions Club supported the endeavour with a donation.
  • Make A Wish will again be holding their Melbourne-Portland fundraising walk, passing through Winchelsea on 25 July make a wish coming thru Winch, as last year they'll be seeking accommodation overnight.

Lions News Roundup - January 2012

  • The Winchelsea Lions Club "Walk To Wurdale" last October raised over $3,600 - the proceeds have been split between Make A Wish and  Breast Cancer
  • Christmas lights were put up outside the Hesse Hospital in Winchelsea, and reportedly much appreciated by the residents
  • The Lion Club's Santa made several visits through the Christmas season eg. the Kindergarten, dishing out lollies as he went - again, much appreciated!
  • Youth of the Year is now recruiting for the 2012 competition, under-19s are encouraged to apply (contact the Lions Club if interested)
  • Local police officer Graham duly completed his cycle ride from Geelong to Alice Springs (along with colleague Craig), raising over $8,500 for Movember - a 16-day ride covering 2,600km, some big hills and plenty of headwind.
  • The Winchelsea Lions' paper recycling project continues to raise significant funds - $9,000 for over 50 tonnes most recently. Unwanted papers can be deposited at the Winchelsea Senior Citizens paper shed (left-hand corner of the property as you go into the carpark).
